Former Brookside actor has passionate role in Brassed Off at Coventry theatre

It was the passion of the lead character in the iconic play Brassed Off - coming to Coventry’s Belgrade this week - that attracted former Brookside star John McArdle to the role.

The Liverpool-born actor, whose television career spans more than 30 years, spoke to the Courier ahead of the touring production, which takes the Belgrade’s stage from Wednesday (April 23) until Saturday April 26.

Set in 1992, the play sees a miners’ brass band at Grimley Colliery - which is about to close - face an uncertain future as they struggle to decide whether to take redundancy packages or head for the picket lines.

The production, directed by Damian Cruden of York Theatre Royal, has been touring since February to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the miners’ strike of 1984 - a time that John remembers well.

He said: “I do vividly remember the period. We used to collect money for the miners on the Brookside set.

“It’s a really important part of our British history. As well as appealing to those who were there, the younger generations will be able to learn from the play and enjoy it.

“And as we are going through a time of austerity again, what happens on stage will be similar to what many families are going through now.”

John had seen the 1996 film of Brassed Off but had never read or seen the play when he was approached with the offer of the role of bandleader Danny. But he jumped at the chance to play him. He said: “His passion is his band and he puts everything into keeping the band together. Any character with that sort of passion is a strong character to play - and a challenge.”
