The Huddersfield-based Mikron Theatre Company, which tours canalside towns around the UK in their barge Tyseley, are returning to St Mary’s allotments off Radford Road on August 22 (6.30pm) to perform Till The Cows Come Home, with an additional performance taking place at Foundry Wood off Prince’s Drive on August 24 (1pm).

Written by Deborah McAndrew and directed by Olwen Nelson, the play follows Harvey Granelli who, fed up with working for Thistledale Council, dreams of following in the footsteps of his Italian father Romeo - part-time playboy and one-time ice cream maker.

But when he whips up a recipe from Papa Granelli’s recipe book, it just doesn’t taste the same. So he embarks on a quest to source the very best ingredients to make the finest ice cream in the world.

Mikron describe their play as a “farm-fresh, full-fat, fair trade fable about the nation’s favourite food”.

Jim Layton, chairman of St Mary’s allotments, said: “We had an audience of 150 last year and the rural allotment setting as the sun went down was perfect.”

People are welcome to bring chairs and blankets and advised to bring warm clothing and waterproofs. Tickets are not required but there will be a cash collection at the end of the show.
