Sir Willard White, who has performed the role of Christus all over the world, and Nathan Vale, who has sung the Evangelist to national critical acclaim, will take up the roles with period instrumentalists and the Warwick-based Armonico Consort at St Mary’s church on Saturday April 12. They will be joined by young people in Armonico’s AC Academy youth choirs.

Written for solo voices, a double choir and a double orchestra, the emotional drama is widely considered as among Bach’s finest works.

Armonico’s artistic director Christopher Monks said: “I did not hear the St Matthew Passion until I was in my twenties and it completely changed the way I viewed Baroque music.

“The piece is intensely dramatic, using a unique range of musical devices.

“Bach found a way of creating hugely emotive and dramatic music theatre, despite the fact that opera was banned by the Lutheran authorities.”

Tickets to the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, cost between £10 and £39.50. Call 0844 581 0750 or visit www.armonico.org.uk
