After taking an impromptu polo lesson five years ago, horse-riding novice Sean Newman was inspired to change the way such an exciting sport seemed inaccessible to the public.

He organised a polo event which was so successful that it has grown by almost 30 times its original size to be the biggest event of its kind in the region.

To encourage his community to enjoy polo, Sean liaised with the Dallas Burston Polo Club, near Leamington, and invited locals to watch a match and enjoy a picnic.

The success of the day resulted in a bigger and better event the following year and in 2009, 500 guests enjoyed the polo matches alongside Pimms, a bouncy castle and an ice cream van which had now been organised.

Four years later, the event has grown so much that Sean and his team are unable to organise it alone and the newly named Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup is expected to receive 5,000 guests this year.

Sean said: “In the next 10 years I believe that this event will become the biggest of its kind in the UK and even in Europe.”

The 2013 Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup will be held for the fifth consecutive year at Dallas Burston Polo Club on Sunday July 14, 11am-5pm.

It will take place on the Stoneythorpe Estate and there will be an international food court offering various temptations. Guests are also welcome to bring their own picnics. Those wishing to have a VIP experience can book in advance and enjoy access to the DBPC Clubhouse, VIP parking and a five course fine dining experience prepared by Mark Higgs’s ‘Indievictual Catering’.

Spectators will watch the final on the ground’s premier polo pitches. Polo captain Tim Rose said: “Our team, Omnia Three Oceans, got such a thrill from last year’s victory at Dallas Burston Polo Club that we are already gearing up for a second win. It is considered an important trophy in our sport, so spectators will experience the power and passion of polo at one of Britain’s most exciting venues.”

Alongside the exciting polo matches, there will be activities such as pony rides, helicopter tours, bouncy obstacle courses and a wide selection of premium exhibition stands to browse.

General manager, Major Carney, formerly Squadron Leader of The Household Cavalry said: “We are looking forward to welcoming our Fine & Country guests back for a fifth year to continue what has now become one of the most popular annual family days out in the region.”
