How Harvey has inspired his father to become a ‘Mo Bro’

A Leamington barman whose son has cancer is inspiring others to take part in an international fundraising campaign this month.

Nick Caswell’s son Harvey, ten, who attends Lapworth Primary School, was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma in August and is undergoing treatment at Birmingham’s children’s hospital.

Wanting to do something to support a cancer charity, Mr Caswell, of Kingsway, who works at the Woodland Tavern in Regent Street, has decided to grow a moustache to raise funds for Movember.

The former soldier, who served in served in the Royal Corps of Signals, said: “Harvey is a fighter like his dad.

“He’s quite an inspiration really, he’s a really, really, brave lad.

“What he is going through was what led me to sign up for Movember.

“The campaign aims to raise money for research into different types of cancer and maybe what we’re doing will get more members of the public involved.”

Mr Casswell and up to 11 others at the pub are taking part in the fundraising effort with some of them growing moustaches and others collecting donations.

The pub has already sold special moustache cupcakes to raise funds and to mark the end of the campaign a barber will visit the establishment to give those growing moustaches a wet shave .

Meanwhile, to boost Harvey’s spirts, Mr Caswell contacted Liverpool Football Club to tell them about his son’s cancer battle and in response they sent him a shirt signed by several of the players including captain and England skipper Steven Gerrard.

Mr Caswell said: “We just want to raise as much money as we can now, the more the better because it’ll all go to a very good cause.”

Movember aims to raise funds for investment into men’s health programmes and comnversations about men’s health which lead to Greater awareness and understanding of the health risks men face, men taking action to remain well and men knowing what action to take if they are unwell.

The first campaign was launched in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003 and since then Movember has gone on to raise £92 million worldwide with participating countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the USA and the UK.

More than a million ‘Mo Bros’ and ‘Mo Sistas’ have taken part in the campaign since the beginning.
