Sam Moffatt, who works at Cabello Hair Design in The Square, will be running the Greater Manchester Marathon on Sunday April 10 for the Alzheimer’s Society in aid of her 83-year-old mother, Shirley, who was diagnosed with the condition three years ago.

Over that time, Shirley’s condition has worsened. According to Sam, Shirley no longer recognises her husband and Sam’s father, Stan, and believes she is still living in her fifties when she is actually in her eighties.

She said: “My mum has one of the most intelligent personalities I’ve ever seen, but she barely knows who my dad is any more. They’ll have been married for 60 years in August but when she sees my dad she just sees this old man now rather than her husband.”

Nicola Wheeldon, the salon’s owner, came up with the idea to offer free haircuts and manicures to help raise money for Sam’s effort after organising a similar venture in the past.

She said: “I’ve done this sort of thing before for breast cancer ages ago, and it was really successful.

“We can tell more people about what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, and I think it will really help Sam.”

Sam has run the marathon twice before and is a member of the Kenilworth Runners, but this particular marathon has her more motivated than ever before because of her familial connection to the charity.

“I’m more focused on this marathon than the ones I’ve done before because I’m running for a charity that means a lot to me. The girls at work are sick to death of me talking about it.

“I’ve ran 400 miles in total during my training and I ran 20 miles on Sunday around Stratford - I’m committed to this 120 per cent. I’d like to thank Pauline and Tom Dable from Kenilworth Runners for their support, especially when I’ve had a really tough day.”

Sam has already raised £480 from donations, beating her initial £400 target, but hopes to raise much more before she runs the marathon.

She said: “I’m just hoping to raise as much as I can. The money I raise is never going to find a cure for Alzheimer’s or dementia, but it will go towards research which could make people’s lives better.

All of the money raised on the day will go towards the Alzheimer’s Society.
