Kirsty inspires young lockdown singers to unite in Rugby and Nuneaton

Young people from Rugby got together with singers from Nuneaton to record their own original song and music video.

The project forms part of the youth sessions delivered by Aspire in Arts.

One of the directors, Kirsty Lowrie said: “Since the virus took place and it was announced that all our team would need to work from home, we had to act fast and think of how we were going to continue delivering our youth services and ensuring we kept in touch with our young people.

“We received funding from the Arts Council’s Emergency Fund and, together with funding from Warwickshire PCC, we delivered our weekly music workshops on Zoom.

“We had a few local guest artists who delivered inspirational workshop sessions, then we teamed up with local artists ‘Champagne Bubbler’ AKA, Quinton Green. The young people wanted to put together their own original song to express how they were feeling at this time and also spread some positivity. They were each challenged to write as many bars as they could and one of our music mentors put the track together.

“The track, ‘Gonna Be Alright’ is amazing. The music video can be seen on our Aspire in Arts YouTube channel and Facebook page. It has also had plays on BBC introducing and Hillz FM. The young people should be very proud of their achievements.”

Normally the young people would have met at Hill Street Youth Centre and in Nuneaton town centre.

It is hoped that the music projects, called Beats, Bars and Banter, will be able to start again in the next couple of months.

The group continue to meet on Zoom every Thursday at 4pm. If any other local young people (aged 11-25) would like to join the sessions, get in touch with Aspire in Arts.

Singers are now working towards their second release.

During lockdown, Aspire in Arts have also given out over 50 free arts packs to local young people and are also delivering free online graffiti workshops and online singing and songwriting workshops and free guitar lessons.

The places are limited and are funded by The Arts Council England.
