A new initiative in Kenilworth has been set up to help motorists either make or save money by lending or hiring cars to fellow members of a group.

The Kenilworth Community Car Club is for residents living in the CV8 postcode only and is aimed at people who either want to only use a car occasionally or make money from the cars they own if they rarely use them.

It is a closed loop group within the Hiyacar network with membership limited to Kenilworth residents only to ensure that all cars and borrowers are locally based for convenience and peace of mind.

Cllr Andrew Milton, a club founder, said: “I may spend a lot of time talking about cycling but I’m also a car driver.

"Most of the time my car is sat on the drive which seems a real waste.

"Why shouldn’t someone else get use out of it?

"Hopefully this initiative will go some way to providing access to a car when people really need one.”

Jan Burnell, who chairs Kenilworth All Together Greener, added: ‘It was great that among the many car club options the working group explored was this off-the-shelf solution. “It has the potential to provide convenient mobility at an affordable price as well as to reduce the number of parked cars on the street something that would be a win-win for people and planet.

"The club is free to join so hopefully lots of people sign up and find it really useful.”

According to a survey by international finance company Nerdwallet, it costs the average person almost £300 a month to own and run a car and, with more and more people working from home, many cars are being used less these days.

To join the Kenilworth Community Car Club sign up to Hiyacar at hiyacar.co.uk and then email your name and address to [email protected] asking to join the Kenilworth Community Car Club and you will be added to the group.

The group is also on Facebook.
