The flags at Rugby Town Hall have been lowered to half-mast today, February 3, in honour of WW2 hero and NHS fundraiser Captain Sir Tom.

Sir Tom became a beacon of hope for the nation last year when he raised £32m for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden for his 100th birthday.

Yesterday Sir Tom died peacefully in hospital at the age of 100 after testing positive for Covid-19, his family have confirmed.

Tributes, including from the Queen, have poured in from across the country - with Rugby council paying a tribute on behalf of the town by flying the town hall's flags at half-mast.

A spokesperson for Rugby Borough Council said: "Yesterday we heard the very sad news that Captain Sir Tom Moore had died in hospital.

"Our thoughts remain with his family.

"Captain Sir Tom Moore was a beacon of hope who lifted the nation when we needed it most and inspired people all over the world.

"Today we are flying flags at half-mast as a mark of respect."
