Voice captured during Whitnash burglary

THE voice of a burglar has been captured when he was in the home of a 96-year-old woman.

On Friday December 16 at 8pm the elderly Whitnash resident awoke in her lounge to find a man wearing a balaclava, holding a large knife.

The man who is believed to have broken in to the property through a window, and asked her where her money is. Fortunately the woman was wearing her Lifeline cord and this automatically recorded their conversation.

The man is clearly heard to say “I don’t want to hurt you...put the phone down... I don’t want to hurt you.”

He left as soon as he realised the Lifeline had been activated.

Following the incident, officers also recovered a grainy CCTV image of a figure, believed to be the offender, and are releasing this along with the voice clip in the hope that someone will recognize him and contact them with a name.

DS 271 Andy Smith said: “We believe the male is white and possibly young, late teens early twenties. He is described as wearing a blue hoody and white scarf.

“Nothing was taken during the incident and the victim, although shaken, was unharmed.”
