Women’s debut amid Berkswell’s five year plan

Dreams of a cricketing centre of excellence in Berkswell are one step closer after the women’s team triumphed in their competitive debut.

The village cricket club has revealed a five year plan to reinvent itself as a regional centre of excellence.

The Balsall Common based club is embarking on a journey to provide opportunity at all levels - starting with the launch of its first ever competitive women’s team.

The ladies won by 30 runs in their opening game against Four Oaks CC at the weekend in what has been celebrated throughout the club.

Chairman, Pat Milnes said that the success, alongside a growing youth team, puts the on track for a brighter future.

Pat said: “The challenge we’ve set ourselves is to create a model of sustainable success with advancement for the best youngsters, with access to top facilities and coaches.

“The launch of our women’s and girls’ sections for 2015 represents a big step in this direction.

“In the long-run this is all going to be great news for our club and wider community.”

The move is being supported by club partners, Tyler Packaging in Leamington.

Adam Kay from the company said they were “extremely proud” to be on board and help the sports club.

The competitive season has now started, with the men’s team also beginning the season with their first game against Worcestershire outfit Ombersley.

The club plays in the Birmingham and District premier division -the highest level of cricket outside of professional county cricket, meaning Berkswell faces some stiff competition over the coming season.

The new female side includes Isabelle Wong who opened bowling for Berswell at Sunday’s game.

The teenager also plays for Warwickshire’s Under 13s and Under 15s and is in the England Women’s Performance Development Programme, for the Top 25 Under 15 English cricketers.

Also highlighted are Sophie Buckton and Ria Fackrell who are helping take the club to new heights as part of its five-year plan.
