Mistakes continue to haunt Ks

SHEFFIELD 36 KENILWORTH 3

Kenilworth slumped to a deserved defeat in South Yorkshire, but had they retained possession at key times, it could have been a much more close-run affair.

In the opening minutes, Sheffield made their intentions clear with a period of sustained pressure matched in equal measure by some stout defence from Kenilworth. Eventually something had to give and a mistake from the Ks defence allowed the home fly-half in for the opening score.

A surge upfield from Kenilworth then produced another mistake which allowed Sheffield to hack through and touch down in the corner.

Although the conversion was missed, the home side had established a healthy 12-0 lead.

Kenilworth continued to take the game to their hosts and another sustained period of pressure was eventually relieved by another penalty, this time for holding on.

Again, Kenilworth pressed hard and their efforts were rewarded with a penalty shortly before half-time converted by Adam Canning.

Almost from the restart, Sheffield kicked long into the Kenilworth half and an error allowed the home side to throw in close to the visitors line. This resulted in another score for Sheffield and, with the successful conversion, made the score 19-3.

Soon after, Kenilworth suffered a further setback when Matt Greavey was sent to the bin for a scrummaging offence.

The home side took full advantage, scoring two more tries in his absence to stretch their lead to 29-3.

Restored to full strength, Kenilworth spent much of the next ten minutes camped inside the Sheffield half. A series of attacks resulted in a turnover on the home side’s 22 from where Sheffield launched a counter-attack which eventually resulted in another score with ten minutes remaining.
