Trainee guide dogs explore spooky Haunted House in Warwickshire ahead of Halloween
A group of trainee guide dogs have been given exclusive access to a Haunted House in Warwickshire, during Halloween week, as part of their vital training.

Conker, Teyla, Reggie and Darcy, who are all training to be guide dogs, vsited St John’s House in Warwick on Wednesday, before the venue opens its doors to the public on Thursday.
Accompanied by their expert Guide Dog Trainers, the future guide dogs were led through the house, visiting the immersive family trail which is based on the traditional tale of Sleeping Beauty.

The dogs encountered characters in costume, lighting and smoke, and explored various decorations and props.
Laura Scott, Guide Dog Trainer Supervisor, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at St John’s House for giving us exclusive access to their Haunted House.
“At this time of year, our trainee guide dogs are likely to encounter lots of Halloween sights and sounds when they are out and about training.
“Dogs are naturally curious but can be fearful when they come across these sorts of unfamiliar things.

“Training trips, like our visit today, means we can expose our dogs to these sceniarios, in a controlled way, which helps us to build their confidence and teach them to remain calm.
“This is all vital preparation for any Halloween activities they may come across as working guide dogs, supporting someone who is visually impaired.”
Guide Dogs states that whilst these trainee guide dogs have visited a spooky event in a controlled approach, pet dogs should avoid scary attractions as they may find them unsettling.
The charity advises skipping noisy events or parties and also skipping dog costumes – dressing dogs up can restrict movement or make them uncomfortable.

Rebecca Coles, Learning and Community Engagement Officer for Heritage and Culture Warwickshire, said: "We were proud to work with Guide Dogs and provide exclusive access to our Haunted House for this valuable training exercise.
“The decorations, lighting effects and sound interactions offered a unique opportunity for the trainee dogs to experience unfamiliar environments in a positive way.
“We wish them every success as they continue their journey towards becoming guide dogs."
St John’s Haunted House is open 29th – 31st October, 10am – 5pm.

The experience, including slime making, potions and crafts lasts around 75 to 90 minutes and is suitable for children accompanied by an adult.
Tickets cost £12 for children and £6 for adults, plus a booking fee, while children under two can attend free.
Please note pet dogs are not allowed at this event.
