Harbury's 20th Century brought to life in new history book

A Harbury author and historian has published a new book charting the dramatic changes that transformed the village throughout the 20th century.

Bill Timson, chairman of Harbury Heritage Group, has released his second history book, 20th Century Harbury, following the success of Life in Victorian Harbury, which was published in 2024.

The 186-page book, containing more than 100 photographs, traces the story of the village decade by decade from 1901 to 2000.

Designed by graphic designer and heritage group vice-chairman David Turner, it explores how Harbury evolved from a small rural community into the village it is today.

Drawing on parish council records, school log books and editions of the Harbury and Ladbroke News, the book highlights many of the key events, challenges and achievements that shaped village life over the past century.

Among the subjects covered are the impact of two world wars, the campaign to secure mains water and modern sewerage, the population growth of the 1960s, and the successful effort to save the historic Manor House from demolition.

The book also celebrates the lives of many residents, village organisations, sports teams and community groups that have played an important role in Harbury’s history.

Bill said: “The book is intended to preserve the memories and stories of ordinary people who helped shape the village we know today.

“It tells the story of how Harbury changed during one of the most eventful centuries in its history.”

The book is available from Harbury Library, the Harbury Heritage Centre and directly from Bill.

The Heritage Centre is open on the third Sunday of each month from 2pm to 4pm.

Copies cost £8.50 and all profits goes to the running of the Heritage Centre.
