Meet the three local champions chosen to switch on the Leamington Christmas lights

Warwick District Council and Leamington Town Council are delighted to announce that three people have been chosen to switch on the Christmas lights in Leamington following a public call for nominations to find a person or group who has or have made a positive impact on the town over the past year.

Recognised for their community spirit, dedication to charitable causes and commitment to supporting others, each received overwhelming backing from residents who praised the positive impact they have had on the town and the people who live in it.

Kevin Murphy was recognised for his long-standing commitment to Leamington, with nominees praising his support for local events, charities, community groups and his business Murphy’s Bar, as well as the generosity and kindness he shows to people across the town.

Kevin said: “I am overwhelmed to have been nominated.

"It will be an honour and a privilege to assist in switching the Christmas lights on.”

Yvonne Mckinnon was nominated for her tireless work establishing and leading the addiction recovery charity New Chapters, creating opportunities for people facing social isolation, mental health challenges and difficult circumstances to connect, take part and thrive.

Yvonne said: “I feel incredibly honoured and humbled to have been nominated by members of our community to take part in switching on Leamington’s Christmas lights.

"This recognition means a great deal to me, but it also belongs to everyone who has supported New Chapters and believed in what we are trying to achieve.

“New Chapters has always been about more than recovery from addiction.

"It is about giving people hope, helping them find their purpose and showing them that their past does not have to define their future.

"To be recognised by the town I care so much about is truly special.”

Darren Butler was celebrated for his dedication to supporting the community and raising money for various charities with his now famous House of Halloween in Whitnash which raises money for Children in Need, as well as the many community events, classes and day trips he runs.

Darren said, “I am completely honoured and humbled to be nominated to turn on the Christmas Lights in Leamington.

"Thank you to everyone who nominated me, it makes everything I do worthwhile.

"I cannot wait to light up the town for Christmas for our wonderful community and look forward to seeing you all there.”

Councillor Sarah Boad, the Mayor of Leamington, said: “It was fantastic to see so many nominations come forward.

"They really highlighted the range of talent and generosity we have in the town.

"Each of them has made a real difference to our community in their own way, and this is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate their contributions.

“I’m delighted to welcome Kevin, Yvonne and Darren to join me in lighting up Leamington.”

Leamington’s Christmas Lights Switch-on event takes place in the town centre on Sunday November 15, with a Christmas market from 10am.

The stage outside the Town Hall will feature music from 3pm, with the lights being switched on at 5.30pm.
