Rugby MP launches petition to reduce speed limit on busy stretch of road

Rugby’s MP has launched a petition calling on Warwickshire County Council to reduce the speed limit on a busy stretch of road.

The petition would see the A426 reduced from 60mph to 40mph between M6 Junction 1 and the Kipling/Boughton Road roundabout.

John Slinger MP said residents have repeatedly contacted him to raise concerns about excessive vehicle speeds and traffic noise along the route.

Since his election, Mr Slinger said he has been working with National Highways, Warwickshire Police and Warwickshire County Council to address the concerns.

As well as collecting signatures for a petition urging action from Warwickshire County Council, Mr Slinger said he also intends to present the petition to Parliament and call on the Government to work with the county council to deliver the proposed change.

Research undertaken by Mr Slinger's office suggests that collisions on the A426 are concentrated around approaches to roundabouts, indicating that vehicle speeds may be contributing to safety risks.

Mr Slinger will also be hosting a public meeting to hear directly from residents and to discuss the campaign.

John Slinger, MP for Rugby, Bulkington and the villages, said: “Residents have consistently raised concerns about speeding and traffic noise on this section of the A426.

“We know collisions occur on the approaches to the roundabouts, and there are pavements and crossing points used by pedestrians throughout an area surrounded by homes.

“In those circumstances, 60mph is simply too fast for this stretch of road.

“That's why I'm asking local people to support this campaign and add their names to my petition.

“Together, we can send a strong message that action is needed to make this road safer.”

Senthil Karadiar, Councillor for Brownsover and Coton Park division, added: “As the county councillor for Brownsover and Coton Park, I have consistently campaigned for reducing the speed limit on the A426.

“Residents deserve safer roads, less traffic noise and a better quality of life. I welcome John Slinger's support and urge everyone to sign this petition to achieve meaningful change.”
