Racing Club Warwick shine in ‘make or break October’

Promoted Racing Club Warwick have come through a make or break October with flying colours and confidence after surprising some of the opposition at their new Southern League Premier Central level.

They won 1-0 at fourth-placed Rushall Olympic on Saturday to end the month with six wins, one draw and one defeat and joint manager Jack Edwards said: “We came into October thinking it looked to be a real test that could make or break us – and it looks to be making us right now.

“It is a tough league and we are probably surprising a few which is great to see. I am proud of the players and proud of the management group.

"Saturday was a fantastic result for us.

“Rushall were fourth so it was always going to be a tough game.

“They have shown they are one of the top teams in this league so the result was probably slightly unexpected.

“But the lads did a great job to put on a performance and get the result.

“We are in a good position. We have only lost one in six.

“We were slightly disappointed with last Tuesday's defeat by Redditch who have now twice done a number on us home and away in the last month. It was a shame to play them so soon again and to lose again.

“So it was a great bounce back on Saturday.”

Saturday's winner came from veteran Adam Walker.

It was his first goal for the club since joining in the summer and Edwards said: “It's about time!

“He has been brilliant for us – everything I had hoped and more this year, having played with him and knowing him inside and out, working with him etc.

“Adam was our marquee signing of the summer and came up trumps on Saturday with a great goal. “But his all-round performance is unbelievable.

“For a 35-year-old stalwart of non-league football, he was brilliant.”

The Racers now host second-placed Bury Town on Saturday before a trip to Worcester City on Tuesday and Edwards added: “We know a bit more Worcester.

“But Bury are one of those Suffolk teams that Cole Skuse has got them into a great position from a league perspective.

“But there is definitely an opportunity there as they have dipped in form in their last few games over recent weeks.

“I have said there couldn't be a better time to be playing some of the clubs we've faced – it was a good time to play Halesowen. It's the same with Bury.

“If we are ever going to go and achieve something in this league we need to be beating teams at home.

“Our away form has been good so we are focused on our home form which, in our opinion, could be improved.”

Neighbours Leamington suffered a fourth straight defeat on Saturday with a 4-2 home loss to Peterborough Sports.

They battled hard in the second half but couldn't overcome a 3-0 first half deficit.

They head for Banbury United on Saturday and then host third-placed Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday.
