SI Kenilworth & District celebrate International Women's Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been celebrated on March 8th since 1911. The theme for this 115th year is “RIGHTS. JUSTICE. ACTION. For ALL WOMEN and GIRLS” and is aimed towards removing structural barriers to equal justice - discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, and the harmful practices and social norms that erode the rights of women and girls. In the present climate of tension, conflict and repression, women and girls only have about 64% of the legal rights enjoyed by men.

Kenilworth Soroptimists always stand up for the rights of women and girls - https://sigbi.org/what-we-do/our-work, and highlight IWD with an informative display in the library and decorating Abbey Fields’ benches in the day’s designated colour – purple: BUT, while still remembering that gender inequalities exist around the world, we choose to use this day to honour and celebrate some of many inspiring and courageous women. We do this by meeting together and reading a range of poems which demonstrate the many ways that women can be brave, strong, overcome oppression and empower each other.
