Leamington is alive with the Sound of Music

YOUNG talents from Leamington and surrounding areas are about to bring one of the most popular musicals of the 20th century to the Spa Centre’s stage.

The Spa Opera group will perform Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final collaboration, The Sound of Music, at the venue in Newbold Terrace from Tuesday October 23 until Saturday October 27.

Featuring some of the most memorable songs ever performed on the musical stage - My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and of course the title song, The Sound of Music, the show is joining in celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the Spa Centre, which has been the group’s performance venue since it opened in 1972.

A young postulant, Maria Rainer, proves too high-spirited for the religious life, so she is sent to serve as governess for the seven children of widowed naval Captain Von Trapp.

Maria’s growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, transforms the lives of both the children and the captain by bringing music into their home.

Director John Smith said; “I have so enjoyed working on this show - we have assembled a talented and experienced cast of principles - they have worked tirelessly on this show.

“It’s been great to see them develop and become the characters that everyone knows and loves so much.

“The ensemble from Spa Opera is adept at harmony singing and its voices are well suited to the beautiful plainsong and anthems written for the nuns. And the children have worked so hard - from the two little Gretls through to the older ones. Since June they have sung, dance and acted their way through the songs which are so well-known.

“The audience are in for a real treat and I’m sure they’ll be touched with the magnitude of the production from start to finish.”
