Local care home residents celebrate 70 years together
“We have had such a lovely day celebrating Jenny and Don’s anniversary”
A couple from Overslade House care home in Rugby have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Jenny and Don Rowles married at St Paul’s Church in Coventry and held their reception at the Railway Hotel in Coventry. Don recalls, “we did not have a honeymoon as people couldn’t afford it in those days.” Jenny is residing at Overslade House Care Home and Don visits as much as he can.

Jenny dedicated 25 years of her working life to nursing, serving as a district nurse in Coventry. She was deeply committed to her role, providing care and support to people within their own homes, and was known for her compassion, reliability, and strong sense of duty.
Don is a devoted husband who loves her very much and remains an important source of comfort and support in her life. They had two sons, and a large and loving family network, including five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who are an important part of their life and identity. Don also recalls the first time he bought Jenny a Christmas Present which was a lovely sweater. Jenny asked if he had kept the receipt and Don replied yes. Jenny said “take it back I don’t like it, and when I want something, I will tell you.” For 70 years they never bought each other presents as Jenny never told Don and that is the way it stayed.

Family and friends came to Overslade House to celebrate the couple’s special anniversary with staff and residents. The home arranged for a special table to be laid for an anniversary meal together and our Hospitality team made a beautiful cake, and Don and Jenny turned back the clock and cut the cake together again.
Don and Jenny enjoyed Bucks Fizz and were then entertained by Activities Coordinator Julie who sang some of their favourite songs by Nat King Cole and the Righteous Brothers.
General Manager, Genoveva Tamasi at Overslade House said: “We have had such a lovely day celebrating Jenny and Don’s anniversary. It’s so wonderful to see two people still very much in love after all these years!”
