Jumpers For Goalpoasts was written in 2013 by Tom Wells and tells the story of five-a-side team Barely Athletic.

Visitors to the Talisman Theatre show are warned that the writer’s themes are adult and may offend, but are being reassured that they are handled with great humour and a fine ear for contemporary dialogue.

Having played at the likes of Hull Truck and the Watford Palace, the play has received a number of five-star reviews from national critics in the Daily Telegraph and Independent.

The play tells how the club not only have to battle with the other teams, but has to work hard to be a team itself through romances, grief and thwarted ambition.

Director Christine Carpenter describes the play as “a life-affirming, big-hearted rom-com,” and “ultimately a charming story of people finding their ways.”

She added that the comedy “has something to offend everybody but is so full of joy. The cast have been terrific and thoroughly enjoyed the play’s creation.”.

John Francis, the theatre publicity manager added: “The play is less ‘4-2-4’ and more ‘1-2-1’ so an encyclopedic knowledge of FA cup winning teams since 1890 is not necessary to fully enjoy the fun.”

The show runs from Monday September 7 to Saturday September 12 with performances beginning at 7.30pm. Tickets cost between £7 and £8.50. Booking is through the box-office on 01926 856548 or on-line via the theatre’s website www.talismantheatre.co.uk/
