Rugby's Indian Hindu community celebrates nine nights of faith, culture and unity at festival

A colourful celebration of faith, culture and unity was held in Rugby to mark the Festival of Navratri.

The Rugby Indian Hindu community joined for the nine day festival at Rugby Indian Community Centre in Edward Street, from October 11-19.

Families, friends and visitors gathered each evening to participate in traditional prayers, devotional music, and the vibrant Garba and Dandiya Raas dances that are synonymous with one of Hinduism’s most cherished festivals.

Navratri, meaning ‘nine nights’ is a celebration of the divine feminine and the triumph of good over evil.

The event provided an opportunity for people of all ages to reconnect with their cultural heritage, strengthen community bonds and share the rich traditions of Hindu culture.

Guests were welcomed throughout the festival, reflecting the importance of cultural and faith celebrations in bringing people together and promoting community cohesion.

Organisers said it was a “great honour and pleasure” to welcome Rugby Mayor Nooria Sayani, who joined the celebrations and participated in the traditional Garba dance.

Cllr Ish Mistry, Head of the Rugby Indian Association said: “Navratri is much more than a festival of dance and celebration. It is a time of reflection, prayer and bringing communities together.

"It has been inspiring to see so many families and individuals attend throughout the nine nights, celebrating our shared heritage while fostering friendship and understanding across the wider Rugby community.

"We are grateful to all the volunteers, performers, sponsors and attendees who helped make this year’s Navratri celebration such a tremendous success. Thanks to the committee members

whose dedication ensured the smooth running of the event and members of the community who contributed to the celebrations.”
