Federation is happy with Labour’s fresh police review

AN independent review into policing to be commissioned by the Labour party has been welcomed by the police officer who represents the Police Federation’s Warwickshire branch.

And the reason Simon Payne (pictured left) supports the move is because he feels the current Winsor review, commissioned by the Coalition Government, “lacks credibility”.

He said: “The Police Federation has formally written to Tom Winsor and Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs select committee, raising our serious concerns about the report.

“We still support a Royal Commission, but the review Labour is commissioning will be better than a report that has no integrity.”

In October last year the Home Secretary appointed Tom Winsor, a partner of a London law firm, to lead a review of police officer and staff pay and conditions.

The first part of this review has been published while the second part in January.

Last week the shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper, speaking at the Labour party conference, announced that Labour is to commission a fresh review to be led by former Met Police chief Lord Stevens.

Police forces are facing a 20 per cent cut in their budgets over the next four years.

Warwick and Leamington MP Chris White said: “We need to be focusing fully on reducing crime and ensuring that we give the police the tools that they need to protect our communities.

“At present, we have the Winsor Review in place to look at the ways that we can best help the police to do their job, but action also needs to be taken now.”

Kenilworth and Southam MP Jeremy Wright was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
