The Safer Schools programme, run by Warwickshire and West Mercia Police forces and the selected schools, also aims to prevent crime and increase awareness among young people and school staff of the dangers of crime both inside and outside school.

Among the schools across Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire selected to be a part are North Leamington, Campion and Trinity School.

At Trinity, Pcso Dave Martin has been stationed at the school with his own office since the beginning of term earlier this month. Assistant principal Matt Alton said: “He helps us to identify what crosses school and social boundaries, for example internet bullying.

“It’s really helpful having him here. He attends staff meetings where we discuss vulnerable students. He also meets with students and may speak in assemblies about drugs, alcohol and other issues that may affect the students outside of school.

“The behaviour at Trinity is very good, but he helps us with forward-thinking and awareness of crime.”

A spokeswoman for Warwickshire Police said the schools have been chosen specifically as it is thought that having a Pcso at these schools would have the greatest impact.

Gareth Morgan, Assistant Chief Constable of the two police forces, said: “The scheme will not only help prevent crime and anti-social behaviour, but will also give young people support and advice so that they can stay safe and do well at school.”

Warwickshire’s police commissioner Ron Ball said: “The officers will become valued educators, teaching young people important lessons about safety and respect. I am confident the programme will continue to be a great success.”
