Protesters gather before Racecourse hotel plan meeting

PROTESTERS have gathered outside Leamington town hall to voice their concern about plans to build a hotel at Warwick Racecourse.

The plans will come before a Warwick District Council planning committee during at meeting at the town hall tonight.

Proposals for the hotel were first announced in 2006, but those who oppose the “overbearing” building say it will ruin views from Warwick town centre, and bring more traffic to the town’s already clogged streets.

One item at issue is the ‘landmark’ drum tower, which the district council’s conservation architect has suggested should be redesigned.

But despite misgivings, officials in the district council’s planning department have recommended that councillors approve the plans, and many restaurants support the hotel, saying it will bring much-needed trade to the town.
